Learn challenges popular perception of the latest ‘hookup tradition’ on university campuses

NEW YORK — A University of Portland research challenges the popular perception that there was a “new and pervasive hookup tradition” among modern university students.

“Present research and popular news reports have described intimate relationships among modern university students because described as a prettybrides fresh and pervasive hookup tradition by which pupils frequently have intercourse without any strings connected,” said study co-author Martin Monto, a sociology teacher during the University of Portland. “This signifies that the faculty campus is now a far more sexualized environment and that undergraduates are having more intercourse than previously. We had been amazed to find this is simply not the situation.”

Inside their research, Monto and co-author Anna Carey used a nationally representative sample from the typical Social Survey greater than 1,800 18 to 25-year-olds, that has finished from senior high school and finished a minumum of one 12 months of college. Monto and Carey, a recently available University of Portland graduate by having a BA in sociology and therapy, contrasted reactions from 1988-1996 with those from 2002-2010, the period that scientists often describe because described as a “hookup culture.”
